Still pleased with last year's visit, the kids second cousin Paul came over again for a stay. This time for four weeks. We could offer him the shed room and two surf boards dad had found at the hard rubbish collection (in addition to his own surf board). Paul had brought the kids some presents. Initially, we showed little interest in the books, but later Paul read us the Dikke Billenbijter book twice.
Whale watching
Mum had postponed Piet's birthday present, a whale watching trip, to Paul's arrival, which happend to coincide with the twice annual migration. We did not quite manage to get on a boat during the school holidays, but given the educational nature, mum took
Piet and Emma out of school for an afternoon. Piet had written and drawn a book about whales, which he had brought on a trip. From a distance, he was able to recognize the spout of a
humpback whale. The weather was great , the ocean calm and the whales
plentiful, so we had a
marvellous time. Meanwhile, Dad picked up Juultje from childcare - his first - as she is still too young to watch whales for more than a minute. In the evening, we had a
barbecue.
In the morning, Juultje played with puzzles with her siblings. Paul had his cup of tea. Paul and Jan travelled to Melbourne to stay two nights with Jan's cousin Daan and his family, who are staying six months down south.
Most days, Paul goes for a surf on Manly beach, which is a five minute walk away. There is a pleasant surfie crowd and the right wave is never far away.
