In June, Piet went with the cubs on a ZooSnooze to Taronga zoo. The higher end version of this program is marketed as Roar and Snore, but essentially the same program minus the dining options is offered to Sydney youth.

dark

We started on Saturday at 5pm at the Zoo. The first proper activity was a touch and talk by zoo staff in the reptile room - where the boys would sleep - with an opportunity for questions. Piet was in his element, as he is very interested in animals and knows an astonishing number of facts, including, for example, the number of bones in a giraffe's neck (a staff question; answer: 14). Once it was dark, we went for a walk in our hi vis vests through the zoo. The Sydney festival of lights, Vivid, was on at the same time with various large lit animals and many visitors.

giraffe listen

We slept in the reptile room, had breakfast and listened attentively - or was it tired? - to another touch and talk session by staff, this time on a flying fox. After the talk, there was time for a daylight walk through the zoo. As we passed by the giraffes, they were just being fed and the staff allowed each cub to give a leaf of lettuce to the giraffe.
