At nursery, Juliana made a hand painting and tried to stick the stickers on the dog's nose.
Emma's sixth birthday
On Emma's birtday, Piet and Juliana were up first - as usual - and because Juultje has a rather impatient personality and people around her tend to give in to her wishes, we allowed her to unwrap
her present with
her brother. Emma enjoyed her
cards, a
painting from Piet,
a book and a
necklace. But the biggest present was going shopping with mum after school to buy her some shoes - poor Emma only had two pair of school shoes, sandals, flip-flops and wellies, so her father insisted any further footwear would count as a present. On Monday night, Emma said she'd had the best birthday ever.
Piet received a dinosaur drawing book and started drawing straight away.
Tonsils
One the Friday after her birthday, Emma had her tonsils and adenoids taken out in a hospital with a view
on the beach. She enjoyed her
icy pole and
DVDs in her new pyjamas. After an overnight stay with dad and
breakfast, we got discharged as planned. As she was five month younger than Piet when he had his operation and she did not need any grommets put in, she initially seemed to recover more quickly. However, the second week at home was still difficult and everybody was happy when she could go to school again the third week.
Halfway through Emma's home stay, uncle Jan (one of Jan's cousins Jan) arrived in Sydney on a work trip and was able to come over for dinner on Saturday. As it happened to be his birthday, we had cake for dessert. That week, school organised a day for kids to bring their grandparents: "Grandfriends day", so opa and oma came over for a visit. Juliana entertained opa with a tin. During the weekend, Emma was fit enough again to play on the beach and go for fish and chips for lunch.
The last weekend in May we celebrated Emma's postponed birthday party with a queen Elsa cake, a treasure hunt with clues in the tree bed and outside, and watching Frozen for the umpteenth time. Most girls had actually watched it more than that and lost interest before the DVD was finished, leading to some tension during the last hour of the party. Girls. A lesson for next time.
Both Emma and Piet signed the card for Bento with a reasonably long story, the first time they did so fairly unprompted.
