Emma and Jan in Europe - October 2024

Munich
Munich Thomas paintings On Tuesday 8th October, Jan drove off early to Munich. Frankfurt is about halfway, where he had coffee with an old neighbour from London and had lunch with a colleague from work. In Munich, he reported a day early at the hotel, a condition set by the school to allow pickup. As the school group had not yet arrived, he took a picture to prove his presence. In Munich, he stayed with a friend, also called Jan, from Sydney. On Wednesday morning, his friend went to work (by bike, a common way of communiting in Munich) and Jan killed his time with a visit to the city center and two museums. In the Alte Pinakothek, he came across Van Gogh and Klimt paintings hanging side by side. As his mum likes both artists, Jan made an exception to his don't-take-pictures-in-musea rule and took a picture capturing both paintings. During the afternoon, he took a nap in the car before picking Emma up at the hotel and driving back to Eindhoven with a few coffee and snack stops, arriving during the night.

Emma in Eindhoven
Emma was exhausted after spending two weeks with her school friends in Europe, so took the time to recuperate. Regardless, oma Bep was delighted to see her. We went to the nearby town of Oirschot, which has a large church and a even older butter church, which dates from 1125. After the short walk, we had lunch in cafe De Zwaan, where Emma and oma so liked the courgette soup with salmon that oma made it again for us at home.

Emma in Amsterdam
oude kerk swing north We visited aunties, uncles and cousins in Amsterdam North at Annigje's place. Aunt Hanna had organized tickets for "the swing" at the Eye museum, a highrise building opposite central station across the water "IJ" (pronounciation like "Eye"). It was a spectacular swing, an experience Emma truly appreciated (and which aunt Hanna vowed never to repeat in her life). Afterwards, the rest of the family joined them by bicycle and continued to the city center by ferry. There we walked from the De Beurs through de Warmoesstraat to the Old Church, which opa Piet loved and which we visited with him during his illnes. In the church, we had a look at the art exhibition. Laure and Emma went shopping, while the older bunch had coffee in the cafe at the Stopera, where Sarah and Jan had their civil ceremony the day before their wedding.
