Pietje is geboren - 5 februari 2008

Pieter John Cornelis

On Tuesday 5th February 2008 at 18h01 was born:

            Pieter John Cornelis Bos

He weighs 4.4kg (9 lb 9 oz) and is 55 centimeters tall. He was named after his grandfathers Piet (Pieter Cornelis Bos) and John (St John Bick). In normal day life, we will call him Piet (pronounced like Pete) or in his early years Pietje (little Pete).

Pietje is mostly sleeping and not eating much yet, so the pictures revolve around a central theme:

Piet on Sarah on the sofa

Piet with Jan
Piet on his first check-up in the hospital (next day)

Before he entered this world
On Monday morning, Sarah's mum, Leonie, arrived on Heathrow at 5am in order to stay with us for 4 weeks. Pietje could not have come at a better date, allowing one day for Leonie to catch up with Sarah. Sarah went into labour at 1.30am on Tuesday. We had a homebirth as planned. This is a very normal option in the Netherlands, but only recently becoming more popular in the UK. We had bought an inflatable pool, which worked wonderfully, especially as the labour lasted until 6pm. The last bit was rather 'intense', as Sarah was describing it at the time. Midwives and trainees came during the day and at the moment of the delivery, there were four around. While Pietje's head came out when he was under water, his shoulders took longer than expected and the final push was on the surface. We were delighted to find out it was a boy. Dad was allowed to cut the umblical cord. As in London midwives tend to travel by public transport, we had no scales to weigh our son, so the midwives could initially only tell us his length (55cm) and head size (37cm), but their most precise estimate (4.2kg) was pretty close to the 4.4kg as measured with the scales that were brought in later in the night, when all gear (and medical waste) was picked up. We only saw the hospital the next day when we went in for a standard check-up by a paediatrician, who only noticed that Piet uses his right arm more than his left. This will be further checked in the next two weeks. Jan's mum came over on a day trip from Eindhoven on the day after the birth, on which we did very little else.
